RK Kometal Gjorče Petrov was founded in 1979 as “Handball Club Gjorče Petrov”. The name is in honor of the great Macedonian revolutionist Gjorče Petrov. The board of the club was very enthusiastic even from beginning, but, after M-r Ivan Bojkov, the current president, entered the club in 1984, they set the goal even higher. The plan was, reaching the top of Europe, something unbelievable at the time, but true at the moment.
Gjorcje Petrov played in the federal leagues in the former SFRY, and after Macedonia gained its independence, became a regular winner of all Macedonian competitions. The main sponsor, “Kometal Trade” – lead by M-r Trifun Kostovski entered the club after the great victory over the (almost) unbeatable (at the time) Hypo from Vienna back in 1994, and the road to the European handball heights was open. Since then, Kometal Gjorče Petrov has developed into a big and respected club all across Europe. A youth training groups are also developed, so it is expected that a lot great handball players will come up to the team in the next years.
Participating in the finals of the Champions League in 2000 and in 2005, together with the victory in the same competition in 2002, as well as the title in the Super Cup in the same year are considered the greatest successes of the club.
